Selena
She was an artist, creator, performer and also set new boundaries in the music world. She was an Mexican American artist who was both traditional and modern. She brought together both worlds and helped bring Tejano music into the mainstream. It was her sudden death which shattered her rising image. That's what happens to a great many celebrities who die far too young. The fans have worked hard throughout the years to keep her legacy alive. The tragic shooting death of Tejano singer Selena spawned a reaction in the Latino community that could be thought of as similar to the responses in the wake of the deaths of Elvis Presley and John Lennon. Selena was an extremely well-known Latino performer throughout North America. Her music transcended cultural barriers and touched the hearts of younger and more mature adults. Selena may have been hailed by many as a Latina Madonna, but she is still a great example to follow. Selena's off-stage family values and involvement in AIDS awareness efforts are exemplary.
